The Tale of Two Evelyns

Our purpose in life is to be good to people. That’s what Evelyn had always been told. When she was young she took it as a matter of fact. But it was hard. No matter how hard she tried, she would always find herself lost again. Hurting someone or hurting herself. Standing in the middle of the woods. Alone.

Sometimes she would find her way back to the path quickly, realizing that she wasn’t very far. Other times she would wander for days before finding her way back. By the time you’re lost, it’s hard to know how deep you really are. Or which way is the way back.

What does it mean to be good to people anyway? You smile and they smile? You tell them you like their dress? You hug them and say “I love you so much”? You pick up after yourself?

What does it mean to be mean to people? You give them a mean face? You tell them not to look at you? You call them a poopy head? You hit them?

What happens? How can you be good one minute and bad the next? It’s like there are two different people in you?
